Celebrate Music in March

Celebrating Music in Our Schools Month (MIOSM) is an important tradition in my school. Music is essential in our schools and is frequently overlooked and unappreciated. Informing your administration and colleagues about the importance of music education can increase respect for music in your school.

How to Celebrate Music in Our Schools Month

Hallway Display

Create a bulletin board. Highlight student work or other relevant information about music education.  This year I used a puzzle theme.  Students completed a writing prompt about music and colored their puzzle pieces.

Seeing students’ responses makes me smile every time I walk by the board.  This board also advocates for my program because everyone in the building can read about the importance of music to the students.

Teacher Talent Show

Recruit your colleagues! Create a musical skit highlighting the musical talents of teachers.  Even if they are not musical, this kind of collaboration and goodwill creates positive interaction with your peers, and that positive will is shared with their students.

If you don’t have time to put together a talent show, consider sharing interesting musical facts about the staff on the school website or in the weekly newsletter.

A simple staff survey will get you started!

Performance or Informance

Depending on where you teach, concerts or music programs may be a large part of your job. Scheduling concerts during MIOSM is an excellent opportunity to showcase and advocate for your program.

Consider programming your concert around a theme they are learning about in the classroom.  Or highlight the skills that your students are learning in the music room.  Consider an informance during the day and Facebook Live the performance for parents.  The possibilities are only limited by your creativity.

In my district, the seventh/eighth-grade band and choir programs hold a music festival to celebrate music in our school’s month. The groups rehearse during the day with a guest conductor and have a concert in the evening.

Music in Our Schools Month reminds us that advocating for our program is essential.  Celebrating MIOSM makes educating parents, colleagues, and the public on the importance of music education and the countless skills students learn easier.
