El Mundo Es Mi Casa Book Review

This book is a collaborative project between two exceptional teachers, poet, Dr. Ana Isabel Saillant Valerio and musician Laura Koulish.

Each lesson is centered around an original poem written by Dr. Ana Isabel Saillant Valerio, an internationally renowned poet, written in both Spanish and English. The lessons processes are reminiscent of the Orff Schulwerk Approach beginning with a game, followed by learning words related to the poem in Spanish, adding in the song, and instruments. Each of the original melodies and ensembles was composed by Laura Koulish, a veteran music educator who has worked with children and provided professional development workshops for adults both locally and nationally.

With humor and sensitivity, these original poems and songs in Spanish with English translations invite self-discovery, participation in a diverse, vibrant culture and environmental awareness.

Each lesson includes a downloadable recording that gives one access to songs, pronunciation and recording of the percussion scores. Two of these lessons are available for preview. Mariquita,  a delightful poem about ladybugs provides the foundation for students to learn facts about ladybugs and their role in nature. Students sing, play, move, and improvise in addition to learning Spanish phrases and vocabulary. El Mundo Es Mi Casa lets students explore how to improve our earth.

Lessons are sequenced for PreK-5, and include movement ideas, with connections to social studies, science, language and visual arts. Poetry explores identity, cultural background, family, neighborhood, diversity, world, shapes, colors, food, animals, the weather and seasons. The book is designed for music teachers and teachers of dual-language and monolingual classes.

Bonus Idea:

Pair one of these songs with a puppet and a story to create a music program. For example, students could sing the song Mariquita before every page of Yoo-Hoo Lady Bug by Mem Fox while another student acts out where the ladybug is hiding using a puppet. The possibilities are endless!
