Teaching process

  1. Play party: 
    Verse 1: She’ll be comin’ round the mountain… 
    – Clap and step steady beat in a circle, lasso “Yee-haw!” 
    Verse 2: She’ll be driving six white horses… 
    – Continue stepping steady beat in a circle, shout, “Whoa, back!” 
    Verse 3: Oh, we’ll all go out to meet her… 
    – Wave and say, “Hi, Babe!” 
    Verse 4: She’ll be wearing pink pajamas… 
    – Laugh and say, “Tee, hee!” 
    Verse 5: She will have to sleep with Grandma… 
    – (snore) 
    Verse 6: We’ll be singing, “Hallelujah!” 
    – Raise hands and shout, “Hallelujah!” 
  2. Students sing the first verse and maintain a steady beat using body percussion 
  1. Students create body percussion to emphasize strong vs. weak beats  
    (i.e., stamp snap, snap, snap) 
  1. Students determine time signature: 4/4 
  1. Teacher conducts a 4/4 pattern while students sing 
  1. Students conduct and sing 
  1. Teacher asks students to identify which beat the first two words begin  
    (trial & error, try each suggestion. The correct answer is beat 4) 
  1. Introduce anacrusis/upbeat/pickup 
  1. Show notation of the rhythm of the first verse; students determine where the remaining three beats are (at the end) 
  1. Read the story with actions!

Extension 

If you are not able to obtain a copy of the children’s book, use the attached YouTube link.  The author and illustrator recently released an illustrated video of themselves reading the book.  You can turn off the volume and follow along while singing the song. 

She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain 

Verse 2: She’ll be drivin’ six white horses when she comes. Whoa back! (Pull on reins) 

Verse 3: Oh, we’ll all go out to greet her when she comes. Hi, there! (Wave) 

Verse 4: Then we’ll kill the old red rooster when she comes. Hack, hack! (Make chopping motion) 

Verse 5: And we’ll all have chicken dumplin’s when she comes. Yum, yum! (Rub stomach) 

Verse 6: Oh, she’ll have to sleep with Grandma when she comes. Snore, snore! (Make snoring sound)
