How did you end up becoming a music teacher?
I always felt at home in my schools’ music rooms, but the original goal was to become a performer. That changed when I got to college (University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point) and met the one and only Judy Bond. It was apparent then that my path would take me to the classroom, and it’s been my focus ever since.
Did a teacher influence your decision to enter education?
The more I learn about teaching, the more I realize that I carry part of every teacher with me. I think about my elementary music teacher every time I teach the Music Street story, my high school drama and music directors when I’m performing on stage, and my undergraduate professors when developing curriculum and programming. My graduate school professors taught me how to really dig into material and do the hard work of research.
What inspires you to share your experiences with other teachers?
We should not all have to reinvent the wheel! I do my part, you do your part, and we all come out ahead.
What is your favorite music teaching moment?
Not a specific one, but it’s generally that “aha!” moment when a student finds their connection or understanding. Nothing beats that.
What has been the biggest surprise/revelation about being a music teacher?
How long I’ve been and how much I’ve enjoyed teaching elementary general music. I was definitely going to be performance music for life, but this work is amazing.
How do you deal with stress?
I’ll let you know when I figure out what works! I usually try a bit of everything; family time, alone time, exercise, rest. I usually find I really just need to drink more water.

What is your favorite food?
Anything crafted with care. Love is definitely an ingredient you can taste.
Do you have any pets? Tell us about them.
We have a few fish and are hoping to get a dog in the near future.
What is your favorite style of music to listen to?
Unfair question. Pass 😉
What is your favorite school appropriate beverage – are you a cola or coffee drinker?
Coffee in the am, water in the pm
What is your favorite book?
Erin Morganstern is amazing and I’ve LOVED both The Night Circus and The Starless Sea.
