How did you end up becoming a music teacher?
The moment I realized I wanted to be a music teacher happened during my senior year of high school. By chance, my class schedule had a very awkward opening that could only be filled by either a physics class or as a “Band-aid” for the high school band director at the middle school. As an eight-year veteran of the school’s band program, I guess it’s pretty obvious which one I chose, and it’s been a labor of love ever since!
Did a teacher influence your decision to enter education?

I had many influential music teachers during my primary and secondary school years. If it weren’t for their constant support and reassurance, I would not have made it through.
What inspires you to share your experiences with other teachers?
I am a new PhD student in Music Education. During my first few years as a music teacher, I noticed there were a lot of gaps in support and education for music teachers, and I am passionate about doing what I can to fill those gaps.
What is your favorite music teaching moment?
Any time my students made me laugh. They are the best part of the job, and whenever we could share a moment of joy, it was the best day ever.
What has been the biggest surprise/revelation about being a music teacher?
For many students, music is the only place they can truly be themselves. Students are drawn to the arts because of the freedom and creativity it inspires. Over the years, my lessons evolved to become more of a safe space for my students to explore that side of themselves.
How do you deal with stress?
Sleep. The better rested I am, the better I can handle the little fires that happen during the day. A healthy sleep schedule is essential to not burning out.
What is your favorite food?
Cheese!
Do you have any pets? Tell us about them.
I do not have any pets myself, but my roommates have a Boston terrier/French bulldog puppy that keeps everyone on their toes!
What is your favorite style of music to listen to?
Trap music. I am a sucker for a good bass drop.
What is your favorite school appropriate beverage – are you a cola or coffee drinker?
All forms of coffee, but especially cold brew!
What is your favorite book?
The Book Thief. It has nothing to do with music, but this book changed my life. I recommend it to anyone that will listen.
If you could be a superhero, who would you be and why?
Iron Man (Woman)! I think it’s important to use the tools and technology we have to make the world a better place.
