How did you end up becoming a music teacher?
I became a music teacher by accident! I teach mainly early years classes as a regular teacher. Because music was my main subject at University, I have always used it extensively to teach all curriculum areas to young children. It’s excellent for teaching speaking skills, maths, physical skills, everything! The schools I have worked in have recognized my passion for music, so I have always played the music lead. I wanted to take this further, so I applied for a vacancy at my local music service. I now teach across the Primary age range, including specialist provision schools, and I teach my instrument, the Oboe.

What is your favorite music teaching moment?
My favorite teaching moment isn’t a moment but an experience. I often teach recorder to a whole class of thirty children. At the end of the term, we do a concert and invite the entire school and the children’s families. I am always so proud of the children. It is often the only musical performance they have ever taken part in, and it is such a boost to their confidence and self-esteem.
What has been the biggest surprise/revelation about being a music teacher?
My biggest surprise about being a music teacher is –what might be a brilliant lesson in one school with one class might be a complete flop with another class! It’s essential to be flexible and be prepared to throw the plans away and go with the children’s interests.

Do you have any pets?
I have two pet guinea pigs called Mimi and Branwell. They are rescue guinea pigs. They are more like dogs, and they love to explore the downstairs rooms and relax on the rug in front of the fire.
What is your favorite food?
My favorite foods are pizza and pasta. I am a vegetarian, and I often choose vegan foods.
What is your favorite style of music to listen to?
My favorite music style to listen to is the Britpop bands from Manchester- Oasis, The Stone Roses, The Inspiral Carpets.
What is your favorite school appropriate beverage – are you a cola or coffee drinker?
I love a good cup of tea or hot chocolate, especially when I have been for a long hill walk.
