Teacher Feature: Danielle Shaub

Get to know our authors!  In our “Teacher Feature,” you will not only learn about our contributors’ professional endeavors but also get to know them as humans too.  Just like our readers – our authors are actively teaching in schools across the United States.

My name is Danielle Shaub, and I am currently in my 16th year of teaching general music and elementary choirs at Lake Local Schools in Hartville, Ohio. In addition to teaching, I am a private flute and piano instructor, accompanist, member of OMEA, presented on bucket drumming, curriculum content, and adaptive music lessons at various state and local conferences, and served on the district PBIS team and co-lead a student leader group called Lake Leaders. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, a Masters’ Degree in the Art of Teaching, and 30+ hours of additional coursework in teaching, leadership, curriculum, and special education.

Some other interesting facts we learned about Danielle…

How did you end up becoming a music teacher?

I have been around music and education my entire life. My mom was a music educator for 35 years and I followed in her footsteps. I never considered another occupation other than teaching music.

Did a teacher influence your decision to enter education?

Many teachers paved the way for my decision to enter education. My band directors, classroom teachers, and flute and piano teachers were influential and always supportive of my career path.

What inspires you to share your experiences with other teachers?

Education is always changing.  I like the fast-paced working environment and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students on a daily basis.

What is your favorite music teaching moment?

Just recently, through grant funding, our 6th grade choir had the opportunity to have a workshop and performance with Elec Simon. Elec is currently a member of the 216-Stix with the Cleveland Cavaliers and former performer with Stomp.

What has been the biggest surprise/revelation about being a music teacher?

Honestly, the longer I teach, the less things surprise me. I had a such a great foundation of teachers in my life that I was well-prepared when I entered the education field.
