Teacher Feature: Danielle Hommel

Hi! My name is Danielle Hommel. I currently teach at Circleville Elementary School in the Pine Bush Central School District, NY. My professional music career started in Washington, DC as an education assistant with The Washington Opera at the Kennedy Center. Upon leaving DC, I began teaching elementary, middle school general music/band in Washington County, MD. After the birth of my three children, I began a preschool music program for the Maryland Symphony Orchestra. When I moved to Cornwall on Hudson, NY, I continued my preschool music program for families in the community and on the West Point Post.

How did you end up becoming a music teacher?

I became a music teacher when I realized my passion for sharing the power of music with children! 

What is your favorite music teaching moment?

My favorite music teaching moment is when a non-verbal student sang for me while she played the ukulele. 

Fun Facts About You?

Do you have any pets? Tell us about them.

I have a chocolate lab named Tuckwell. We named him after French Horn player Barry Tuckwell. I also have an Australian Shepherd named Haggis, two cats: Beethoven and Mozart, and a hedgehog named Quillie Wonka. 

What is your favorite style of music to listen to?  

Jazz, Big Band, and music from the Romantic period. 

What is your favorite school-appropriate beverage – are you a cola or coffee drinker? 

Coffee.
