Hello! My name is Alexandra Robinson. I am currently in my 3rd year of teaching at Santa Rosa City Schools in Santa Rosa, California. I am currently on the Elementary Music team, teaching Kindergarten through 6th grade with general and instrumental music. I have an extensive background in performance music, getting my Bachelor’s of Clarinet performance from Missouri State University and a Master’s of Clarinet Performance from Louisiana State University. I am an avid performer in my area playing in many ensembles including wind ensembles, chamber groups, and orchestras. I am a mom to two wonderful children, Reya (age 4) and Nel (age 1).
How did you end up becoming a music teacher?
When I was younger, I had a really huge passion for learning to perform the clarinet. As I got older and had kids, I realized that my dream was to teach little ones all about music. It still ignites a huge passion in me when I see a student’s face light up when they sing a solo or remember the lyrics to a song or get a hard passage on their instrument. It’s the best!
What is your favorite music teaching moment?
SO FAR, my favorite teaching moment was my very first concert of my very first teaching job. I had so many doubts about myself and my ability to pull off an entire concert with the entire school, but after the last class sang their song and my students brought me up flowers, my heart was so full.
What has been the biggest surprise/revelation about being a music teacher?
Sometimes kids just need to sing songs. During my first year, I focused so much on teaching every single thing in my scope and sequence that I kind of overlooked the fact that in music class, it’s ok to just sing.
How do you deal with stress?
I exercise, carve out relaxation time (especially during the weekends!) and have a bunch of family time!
What is your favorite food?
I love Mexican food SO much. It helps that I live in one of the best places to get the best Mexican food, but it’s absolutely my favorite. Also, anything chocolate.
Do you have any pets? Tell us about them.
Yes! We have a black lab named Roux. We adopted her in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and she is literally the best dog in the entire world. She loves to play catch and run on the beach.
What is your favorite style of music to listen to?
I love all styles of music. Any given day I could be listening to Mozart then Coolio. But if I have to narrow it down, I think I listen the most to Rock.
What is your favorite school appropriate beverage – are you a cola or coffee drinker?
Coffee, coffee, and more coffee! And water!
