Did a teacher influence your decision to enter education?
I had two exceptional teachers growing up who helped guide me into the field of education: a children’s choir director at my church in elementary school and a musical theatre director in middle and high school. Both provided me with outstanding experiences to spark my passion for music. As a young child, I remember being enamored with the Orff instruments and movement we would use in our choir practices. As a teenager, I was given opportunities to lead and teach my peers, which set me on the path to education.
What inspires you to share your experiences with other teachers?
I have learned so much from my amazing colleagues in my 22 years of teaching. I love sharing ideas and collaborating with other teachers. If what I have to say is useful, I am happy to share it.
What is your favorite music teaching moment?
A few years ago, I created an Orff arrangement of “Baby Shark” for my choir to perform on the spring concert (I know, the song all music teachers love to hate…). We kept it as a total surprise, and even titled the song with the Latin name for a baby nurse shark: Carcharhinus Leucas Juvenile. When we had our afternoon performance for the students, the entire audience started singing along and doing the motions. It was an awesome surprise for our students, but it was even more rewarding to see the expressions of joy on the faces of my choir members as they experienced such a great reaction from an audience to their performance.

What is your favorite food?
Pasta with homemade sauce. My husband and I love to garden, so I enjoy making my own marinara and pesto sauce with ingredients we grew ourselves.
Do you have any pets? Tell us about them.
I have two cats named Sebastian (as in Bach) and Otis (as in Redding).
What is your favorite school appropriate beverage – are you a cola or coffee drinker?
COFFEE!
What is your favorite book?
I love children’s books and am always on the lookout for a good picture book to use in my classroom, especially if it is one where I can use funny voices or insert a little drama.
