A Case for Orff

Maybe you’ve heard of Orff, but are you still trying to figure out what that really means? The Orff Schulwerk teaching method, developed by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman, is a dynamic and interactive approach to music education. Orff Schulwerk nurtures children’s innate musicality, fostering a love for music through experiential learning. 

• Orff Schulwerk Philosophy: At its core, the Orff Schulwerk philosophy believes in music as a universal language accessible to all. This approach engages children in experiential, playful music-making, integrating speech, rhythm, body percussion, singing, and instrumental play. By encouraging individual expression and collaboration, Orff Schulwerk aims to develop a holistic understanding of music, recognizing each child’s potential to become a confident and expressive musician. 

• Elemental Approach: The elemental approach of Orff Schulwerk focuses on the fundamental building blocks of music, including rhythm, melody, harmony, and timbre. Students participate in activities like clapping, chanting, singing, playing percussion instruments, and creating compositions. These experiences help students develop a solid foundation in musical concepts while fostering a keen sense of rhythm and tonality. 

• Integration of Movement and Dance: Movement and dance play an integral role in Orff Schulwerk. Children explore the connections between music and movement through body percussion, rhythmic games, and creative movement exercises. Students develop a deep sense of musical phrasing, expression, and kinesthetic awareness by incorporating physicality into music-making. 

• Improvisation and Composition: Orff Schulwerk emphasizes improvisation and composition as essential to musical learning. Guided improvisation activities enable children to experiment with rhythmic patterns, melodic fragments, and harmonies, fostering their creativity and musical intuition. Composition exercises empower students to create their own musical pieces, allowing them to express ideas and emotions through music. 

• Orff Instruments: Orff and Keetman designed xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, and percussion instruments to create a simplified way to engage with music. These smaller-scale instruments remove barriers to successful music making while still creating a beautiful, rich sound.  If you do have the means to add barred instruments, students experience improved listening skills, ensemble playing, and a deeper understanding of musical structures. Although instruments serve as fantastic tools for young students, it’s worth mentioning that the essence of Orff Schulwerk lies in the ability to sing, play, and dance without relying on instruments.
