Music and STEAM education pioneer Laurie Orth is passionate about creating a pipeline for young people into STEAM through music and space exploration. Currently, Laurie is an independent contractor at the Jessye Norman School of the Arts and teaches at Challenge Prep Academy, in Augusta, Georgia.
In 2024, Laurie began a year long fellowship with PolarSTEAM, sponsored by Oregon State University and the National Science Foundation. She is paired with Physicist Dr. Amy Lowitz, to create an educational music and STEAM resource about the South Pole Telescope and Antarctica. In June, she worked with Emmy Award winning Janet Ivey, of Janet’s Planet, to teach her space music curriculum to young people in rural Georgia.
In June 2023, Laurie was the only music educator accepted into the prestigious Lift Off Institute for STEM educators at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, in Houston, TX. In March 2023, she launched a digital download product, Rocket Recorder – Satellite Edition, available exclusively through Music ConstructED.
She presented at New York State School Music Association’s 2023 Eastern Division Conference in Rochester, NY. In November 2022, Laurie presented her space-themed music curriculum at NAfME’s National Conference in Washington, DC.
In July 2022, Laurie was a guest instructor at the Douglas Space and Science Foundation Inc.’s Star Camp, in Ogden, Utah, where she choreographed her song “Space Explorers Anthem” for elementary campers. She was a clinician at GA, SC, and AZ MEA Conferences.
She has taught music workshops for the Girl Scouts featuring her space songs, women in aerospace, and rockets. She has presented her STEAM curriculum internationally and is a frequent podcast guest. In 2019, Laurie published her first book, Rocket Recorder: Volume One, an innovative music workbook for recorder students that introduces space exploration and rockets. In 2019, she was selected as a NASA social media influencer. Laurie serves as a Space Station Ambassador for the ISS National Lab, a Teacher Liaison with the Space Foundation, and President of the Savannah Chapter of the Air & Space Forces Association. In 2012, she began her own entrepreneurial business teaching music to the homeschool community. Laurie’s outreach continues to grow with her YouTube channel, Laurie Orth Music Teacher.
