Teacher Feature: Ashley Porter

Get to know our contributors. In our “Teacher Feature” you will not only learn about our contributors’ professional endeavors, but also get to know them as human too. Just like our readers – our authors are actively teaching in schools across the United States

Hello! My name is Ashley Porter, the author of the blog, More Than Music Education! I have been teaching for 9 years in a wide variety of demographics, from farm towns to rural to urban. Currently, I teach K-5 Music in the North Kansas City School District at one of the extended calendar year-round elementary schools. I have been inspired by so many wonderful people and educators in this world to step up and share my ideas. I’m an Enneagram Type 3: The Achiever and that tells pretty much all you need to know about me. Music was always my safe haven and I bring that love to the classroom, to help my students. I have been married for 9 years and love spending time with my husband!

Some other interesting facts we learned about Ashley…

Did a teacher influence your decision to enter education?

In school, my band director was always there to listen and knew what was going on in our lives, for the most part.  She encouraged me to get a music education degree, so I cadet taught with her, had a great time, and here I am in my 10th year.

What inspired you to share your experiences with other teachers?

Basically, whenever I find something that students really enjoyed, or we were smiling and having fun together, I want to talk to others about it.  Then I can find new experiences for the kids and extensions!

What is your favorite music teaching moment?

When a choir I directed was selected for the MMEA Conference in 2018!

What has been the biggest surprise/revelation about being a music teacher?

How hard it is.  It feels like ever-spinning plates in the air.

Fun Facts About You?

What is your favorite food?

Pesto

What is your favorite school appropriate beverage – are you a cola or coffee drinker?

Coffee–I used to be a barista!  I love a cinnamon almond milk macchiato!

What is your favorite book?

All the light we cannot see, by Anthony Doerr.

It’s about this girl in Paris in WWII who is blind, lives with her Papa, and has to go into hiding on her own, but the Germans keep coming to their house looking for something from the Museum.

If you could be a superhero, who would you be and why?

I would be Captain Marvel because she’s bada$$, and can fly through a spaceship and destroy it with her head.

We hope you enjoyed getting to know Ashley as much as we have.  Make sure to check out her article – Hip Hop in the General Music Setting
